Insights from the Counselors

What’s going on? What is this disorientation that people are feeling, the trouble focusing, getting things done, thinking straight? Ever since COVID19 arrived in our lives, in our states, cities and towns, many of us are living in altered states.
All this change in our living situations, and the terrifying reports about what is happening around the world can overwhelm our systems. Pachacuti is an ancient Incan term I learned from a Bard student years ago. She defined it as, “a world turned upside down”. Too much change and too much loss.
A Letter about COVID-19 and Mental Health from the Director of Counseling Services
Dear Bard Students and the Bard Community:
The Bard Counseling Service is suspending in-person sessions and groups for now but will continue to make counseling services available for all enrolled Bard students through telephone or other remote methods. We understand these are challenging times for everyone and we will be creative and flexible in finding ways to stay connected.
If you already have a relationship with a Bard counselor, please email that counselor directly to set up a time to speak. If you are new to our services, and are in need of counseling support, or have some questions about what we can offer, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know your available times to connect in the next few days. A counselor will get back to you with a day and time that matches your open times to arrange a time to talk.
And for the entire Bard community, please check our website hcw.bard.edu/counseling/covid19 for many resources related to COVID19 and Mental Health including calming playlists, meditations, and practical advice to manage anxiety. We wish you health and resilience as together we navigate the uncertain times ahead. We are here to support you.

Our mission is to provide high quality mental health services, referrals and educational programming to foster the intellectual, emotional and personal-social development of all students. We are dedicated to meeting the challenges of a complex world responsibly, actively, and imaginatively. We are committed to inclusive excellence and the promotion of social justice. We appreciate and honor the rich diversity of the institution and work with all students with compassion, respect and dignity.
